Legs & Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. High blood glucose levels can cause several symptoms including blurry vision, fatigue and excessive thirst.

Because diabetes causes the blood vessels of the legs and feet to narrow and harden, the disease causes complications in these areas of the body as well. Nerve damage, or neuropathy results in a loss of feeling in the feet and other extremities. Poor circulation reduces the ability for the body to heal, turning small foot problems into serious complications.

Poor circulation to the lower extremities can lead to:

  • Chronic skin ulcers
  • Numbness and burning of the lower legs and feet
  • Leg pain
  • Gangrene that could require amputation
  • Cramps while walking

The right socks and stockings can help to protect feet and keep them dry and they help to increase leg circulation.

Note: Socks and stockings are only a part of proper diabetic foot care. Inspect your feet every day, and seek care early if you do suffer a foot injury. Consult with your health care provider on proper treatment and prevention of diabetes related foot problems.
